Ginger: Great for your health and your cooking

Ginger, Zingiber officinale, is a plant whose root is excellent for cooking and for your health. It’s widely known for being aromatic and having spicy, sweet and bitter notes on it’s own, however, when you mix it with other ingredients it becomes refreshing as well.

Nutritionally speaking ginger root is spectacular, because it’s loaded with water, vitamin C, B9, magnesium, potassium, and antioxidants. It also contributes in smaller quantities with vitamin E, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and B6, calcium, iron, manganese, zin, phosphorus, and sodium. Ginger’s great quantity of vitamin C makes it a common cure for sore throats, phlegm, flues, and colds. However, it’s also beneficial for other illnesses like digestion and gas problems, nausea, inflammatory conditions, cardiovascular health, and there’s even studies that confirm that it reduces cancer risk thanks to ginger’s antioxidants.

From the culinary aspect, ginger is also much appreciated. You can find it in practically all kinds of foods, from drinks to savory dishes and desserts. It is extremely versatile. You can use it as a condiment to prepare salts and marinades; as pickled or cured to accompany other meals (as in the case of sushi); to prepare sauces; as an infusion for drinks such as cocktails, teas, and juices; as a flavoring of desserts such as ice cream, creams, mousses, etc.

In our case, we use ginger to flavor our guayusa soda, sweetened with panela, achieving an authentic, perfectly balanced drink with fresh spicy notes.
